Dawcul has a strong presence in Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, providing technical support, supervision of installations and overall project management for a number of projects in the region.

Here are a few examples of recent work carried out under guidance of our expert team in Croatia.

CR7924 CDU revamp project in INA refinery Rijeka – Sulzer (GTC Technology)

GTC Technology Europe s.r.o. contracted with INA Industrija nafte for the Crude distillation unit (CDU) revamp project in refinery Rijeka for the replacement of a distillation column 321-C-001 (referred to C-1 column).

The main objective of the project was to change the distillation column and to have a CDU capable to operate on design unit capacity of 600 t/h, 350 on stream days (5.0 Mt/year) together with new high efficiency trays type of internals instead of structural packaging.

The new C-1 Column had to be connected to the rest of the unit and to be in operation with the existing part of CDU.

The GTC scope of supply included: Process study, FEED Documentation Package for CDU Revamp and the Engineering, Main Design for C-1 replacement, Demolishing design for C-1 replacement, fully equipped C-1 Column (with Internals) manufacturing, transportation, and the erection on the foundation of the Column, commissioning, start up and performance test of the Column 321-C-001.

CR9613 Replacement of the Steam turbines with electric motors in INA Refinery Rijeka

This project required the replacement of four steam condensing turbines on three process complexes (FCC, Fluid catalytic cracking – blower and wet gas compressor, HCU – Hydrocracking – recycle gas compressor and Platformer II – recycle gas compressor) with a new drive machine i.e. high-speed electric motor.

The project required reconstruction of the existing control systems of process compressors, replacement and installation of additional/new instrumentation and control equipment, electrical equipment for power supply of electric motor drives and connecting them to existing monitoring and control systems of individual locations.

Dawcul’s partner Compressors Controls Corporation (CCC) delivered CCC Inside Control Applications and HMI Libraries for all four units, conducted the Factory acceptance Test (FAT), CCC Inside Engineering Utilities and Commissioning Assistance.

Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) were finalized in April 2024 and the commissioning on four units was completed by June 2024.

VAE Controls Extension of Liquid Cargo Terminal in Koper

The port of Koper is the biggest sea port in Slovenia, handling a wide range of solid and liquid cargoes. The liquid cargo terminal handles diesel and JET-A1, unloading products from ships, storing and loading to tanktrucks and railcars.

The main target of this project was the extension of loading capacity and diversification of loaded products thanks to the newly installed system for additive dosing and blending of diesel with FAME.

The new metering lines were designed, produced and delivered consisting of volumetric flowmeters, air eliminators, flow control valves, additive dosing units Accuplus and flow computers Acculoads, all from FMC Technologies.

Metering lines were certified for custody transfer according to MID. The additive dosing system enables delivery of specific products for different customers including colouring. VAE Controls also delivered the administration part of its system TAMAS® for pre-processing of loading data and making an interface to the upper control system.

Modernisation of TankTruck Terminal in Rijeka Refinery

INA is a European oil company with a leading role in the Croatian oil business and a strong position in the region.

Rijeka Refinery is the biggest refinery of INA, located on the Adriatic coast and producing the whole range of petroleum fuels. The tank truck terminal consists of “light fuels” and “heavy fuels” loading facilities.

This project included the complete reconstruction of both terminals. VAE Controls was selected as the most capable and experienced supplier for the project automation, technology and control / administration system.

The scope included flow metering skids with additive dosing for light fuels (gasoline, diesel, JET-A1) and metering skids for heavy fuels. Metering is based on volumetric flowmeters with air eliminators, flow control valves, and flow computers Accuload III from FMC Technologies, and density meters from Emerson, all as a complete package and certified according to MID for custody transfer metering.

The project also included additive dosing units Accuplus, loading arms from EMCO, Scully overfill testers, VAE Controls’ own designed and manufactured grounding tester systems, and weight bridges by Vage.

The terminal automation and control system is TAMAS®. This includes complete visualisation of all the technology and administration of the complete loading process, including a driver’s self-service kiosk with automated scheduling via electronic billboard for calling tank trucks for loading, and print outs of all necessary documentation. The project was successfully completed and handed over with all relevant testing and certification to the satisfaction of the customer on time and to schedule. It is now in full functional operation.
